Home     /     Blog     /     Semi-Closed vs Conventional Greenhouses: Comparing Climate Control Scope
By ECO Green House

Semi-closed greenhouse proposals can contain very different air-handling and cooling arrangements. Define the climate-control scope before comparing them with a conventional ventilated house, because the label alone does not describe performance or operating cost.

Use this guide when reviewing a semi-closed greenhouse proposal or checking an existing installation.

Ask What Semi-Closed Means in the Proposal

Request a process diagram identifying air intake, circulation, cooling, heating and discharge. Clarify which functions run in each operating mode and whether roof vents remain part of the design. Some proposals place more equipment between the outside air and crop zone than others. A written sequence of operation is more useful than a general claim about precise climate control.

Compare the Same Climate Inputs

Give both designers the location, outdoor climate information, crop and operating season. Ask for the conditions each package is intended to maintain and the limitations under extreme weather. Equipment capacity should be explained through assumptions. A comparison that gives one house a different crop target or operating period cannot isolate the effect of its air-handling design.

Review Distribution Within the Crop

Show how conditioned air reaches growing areas and where it returns or leaves. Include ducts, fans, screens and the expected mature crop canopy on the layout. Check service access around air-handling equipment. A central unit's capacity does not by itself confirm uniform conditions throughout a large block. Ask how distribution will be checked during commissioning and later operation.

Separate Purchase and Operating Budgets

List the installed air-handling scope, electrical demand assumptions, maintenance items and required operator skills. Request a transparent energy estimate using the stated climate and operating inputs. Avoid treating a proposed percentage saving as a guaranteed result. Compare service parts, filters where used, access requirements and training alongside the original purchase price.

Define Acceptance Before Contracting

Agree which sensors, operating sequences and equipment functions will be tested. Specify how faults, alarms and manual operation are demonstrated to staff. Keep the commissioning criteria separate from unverified crop-yield claims. A semi-closed project is easier to evaluate when the quotation defines the air-handling process and the evidence used to confirm that the installed package follows it.

Buyer’s Review Checklist

Before approving the scope, confirm the following points in the drawings, quotation or handover records:

  • Air-handling process diagram
  • Common climate and crop assumptions
  • Distribution and servicing layout
  • Transparent energy-estimate inputs
  • Written commissioning criteria

Frequently Asked Question

Does semi-closed mean the greenhouse never opens vents?

Not necessarily. The operating strategy depends on the design and external conditions. Ask when vents or other air paths are used and how the controller changes modes. The supplier should explain the actual configuration rather than relying on the system name.

Prepare a Clear Project Enquiry

Send ECO Green House your location, crop, growing area and the details relevant to semi-closed vs conventional greenhouse. Include existing drawings or equipment references where available, and identify which items need supply, installation or technical review. A clear brief makes it easier to discuss the required scope and resolve exclusions.
